Black In America vs. Black & Abroad ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• My heart is so heavy unpacking the recent events that occurred in Minnesota , on top of everything else happening around us in 2020. It's a lot to take in. I had a very different post scheduled for my page today , but it didn’t feel right , considering what our communities are dealing with. But , as I've been watching this country literally burn and have been watching our global community mourn and fight alongside us , I reflect on how I feel being Black in America vs being Black while traveling. Nervous. Angry. Sad. Sometimes hopeful. Confused. Afraid. Challenged. Seen. Exhausted. Proud (to be black). •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Any time I share with family or friends any upcoming travel plans , I'm always met with concerned eyes or messages begging me to “please , stay safe”. I chuckle because I almost always feel safer while abroad versus being in places in my own backyard. I have had more racist experiences in my home town in Pennsylvania than in Southeast Asia. I've been called the n-word in  Boston on multiple occasions but "cousin" or "friend" in Egypt. I've seen similar rates of poverty , food desserts , lack of resources , subpar healthcare systems where I grew up , to these places we call developing countries" (formally known as 3rd World Countries. Who’s really the developing country •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• This isn't to say that other countries and cultures don't experience issues with racism , because we can all agree that black and brown  people unfortunately deal with discrimination around the world. This hate is everywhere. We have many shared experiences. But , this is to say that the US of A is not the great country that it likes to pretend to be and I think the world is starting to see these truths unfold more and more on a world stage...it's time for change , either in this culture , our leadership , and politics....or in my personal location.
